Every June, we recognize Men's Mental Health Month. It's a dedicated time to raise awareness about the mental health struggles men and boys face, and to challenge the stereotypes that often prevent them from seeking help. While mental health is important for everyone, men are less likely to talk about their emotions or seek support.
This month shines a light on these issues and encourages open conversations about mental well-being. By understanding the challenges men face and promoting help-seeking behaviors, we can create a more supportive environment for all boys and men to thrive.
For us for Men's Mental Health Month, we want to focus on the amazing boys on the spectrum and how we can work together to help them grow and develop into healthy and happy men!
Mums, you know the incredible strength and unique perspective your son possesses. Did you know food can play a big role in supporting his mental well-being and overall health?
As a health coach and someone who experiences mental health issues, which I know are greatly impacted by the foods I consume as well as many other lifestyle factors, I'm more than happy to share my knowledge and some tips to hopefully inspire and help our community.
Here are 5 primal food hacks, inspired by the wisdom of our ancestors, to help your son thrive:
1. Brain Booster Bites: Make Fish Their Friend
Salmon, sardines, mackerel – these fishy friends are packed with omega-3 fatty acids, essential for brain development and function. Omega-3s have been linked to improved mood, reduced anxiety, and even sharper cognitive skills. Sneak them into his diet with fun fish cakes, salmon burgers, or hidden in a delicious fish bake.
Remember, wild-caught is best as farmed sources contain high amounts of omega-6's and are very inflammatory.
2. Egg-cellent Choice: The Power of Protein
Eggs aren't just for breakfast anymore! They're a complete protein source, giving your son the building blocks his body needs. But the benefits go beyond that! Eggs are loaded with choline, a superhero nutrient for memory, learning, and a positive mood.
3. Berry Blast: Nature's Candy for the Mind
Forget sugary treats! Berries are a natural mood booster. They're high antioxidants that protect his brain from free radicals. They're also a great source of vitamin C, which keeps his immune system strong and supports a balanced mood.
Organic is always best as conventionally-grown berries are thigh in toxic chemicals. Woolies and Coles homebrand organic frozen varieties are pretty affordable and are on our weekly shopping list. I make berry jelly, berry/organic apple jelly, cooked berries and apple, paleo crumble, or just thaw them and dollop some pure coconut cream and raw honey on top.
4. Beyond the Plate: The Hidden Power of Organ Meats
We know vegetables are important, but for a real nutrition boost, consider incorporating organ meats like liver, heart, and kidney. These nutrient powerhouses are packed with B vitamins, especially B12 and folate, which are crucial for brain function and a healthy nervous system. They're also rich in choline and other essential minerals.
Beef is the most nutrient-dense, next is lamb, then chicken and they're always best organic and pastured/grass-fed. Most can be hidden in dishes made with other meats (eg food processed with mince and turned into patties, added to stews etc).
If one just cannot stomach them for whatever reason (including the cook in the household having to source and prepare them) then a great alternative is freeze-dried powders (in tubs or caps). Our friends at Ancestral Nutrition have a great variety of products to choose from.
5. Ditch the Junk, Embrace the Whole: Clean Eating for a Clear Mind
This one's a no-brainer! Processed foods, sugary drinks, and unhealthy fats can contribute to inflammation, which can impact mental well-being. So, mums, let's create a food environment filled with whole foods like fish, eggs, pure/clean fruits, vegetables, and even those hidden-gem organ meats. Your son's body and mind will reap the rewards!
